Meningitis Trust petition to help survivors of Meningitis
Thousands of children in the UK today have had to fight for their lives after meningitis has struck. Every year in the UK, a further 1,500 children will fall victim to bacterial meningitis. Many are left coping with after-effects. Some are visible (such as severe brain damage, deafness, and limb loss where septicaemia has happened). Others are hidden (such as memory loss, mental health problems and communication issues) which often results in real challenges at school.
The Meningitis Trust, with your help, is campaigning to secure the automatic right for any child who has had meningitis to have timely and appropriate assessments throughout their educational life, to identify quickly what help they need and ensure they get it. Genesis Research Trust Chairman Professor Robert Winston & Silver Cross Owner, Alan Halsall |

Silver Cross has agreed a philanthropic partnership with Professor Robert Winston’s medical research charity, Genesis Research Trust. Two Silver Cross Bursaries will enable leading scientists at the Wolfson and Weston Institute for Family Health to undertake two major new studies into the prediction of early preterm birth and to find markers in the lining of the womb to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes before birth.
Genesis Research Trust was founded in 1985 as a charity to raise money to finance the largest UK-based collection of scientists and clinicians working tirelessly to help understand the causes of many conditions that affect the health of women, mothers and babies. |
Despite countless breakthroughs in medical science, we still do not understand why some pregnancies will end in tragedy. For most of us, having a child of our own is the most fulfilling experience of our lives. All of us can imagine the desperation and sadness of parents who lose a baby and the life-shattering impact that a disabled or seriously ill child has on a family. With around 250 babies dying weekly in the UK from complications during pregnancy (1 in 8 babies are born prematurely; 1 in 4 women experience miscarriage; 1 in 175 babies are stillborn). The work at Genesis Research Trust focuses on the conditions and diseases that threaten on of our most cherished desires – to have a happy and healthy family.
“I am delighted that our charity has become a partner of the UK’s longest established pram manufacturer. The support from Silver Cross will help us to achieve that which we hold most dear – a happy and healthy family,” said Professor Winston, Chairman of Genesis Research Trust.
Alan Halsall, Silver Cross Owner and Chairman added; “We at Silver Cross are delighted to support the important work of Genesis Research Trust. Silver Cross always wants to support small charities which can make a difference. We believe we have found a very impressive charity under the inspired leadership of Professor Robert Winston.”
